A lot of debate exists lately on the subject of learning to speak Spanish, especially due to the reality that many of the ilegal immigrants moving from Central to North America (as far as we know) in recent year it has jumped drastically. Many claim that if Americans were to learn to speak Spanish it would simply further the problem of illegal immigration by making it easier for them to function in society. It is widely believed that if they were made to speak English in order to survive in our culture, the immigration debate would quickly disappear by itself.

Americans are just snobs when it comes to their own language. Due to the prominence of the English language in today’s world, they have slowly become more complacent. Nearly every other nation around the globe demands that its youth learn in school to speak (at the very least) English and their native language; you actually would discover, if you visited a European grade school, that the students there spend a lot of time learning to perfect their own language and to speak the languages of the countries that border them.

This means if you go to France to study, you have to take several language courses to learn how to conversate fluently in French and English, also acquiring a basic knowledge of Italian, German and Spanish to prepare you for a bilingual job in your local town or far away.

Americans haven’t had to do this because almost every foreign country teaches English to its students. Upon traveling to a foreign country they are almost guaranteed to be able to find at least one individual who speaks English in any establishment that they go to. This means that the practice of learning the language of your neighbors has been cast aside. By rights Americans should learn to speak both French and Spanish, in order to give them a leg up on doing business with their closest neighbors, Mexico and Canada; however, this has been spurned in the arrogant belief that anyone wishing to have any interaction, whether it be for financial or personal gain, in the United States must learn to speak English in order to do so, as English is the language of America.

Never mind, of course, that until recent years the United States didn’t even HAVE an “official” language in the eyes of its citizens. The U.S. is known as a melting pot; the original settlers arrived on its golden shores speaking all kinds of languages. Indeed, in many areas of the U.S., this is more than obvious.

The second language of Louisiana is considered to be French, likewise in the South West and Florida Spanish is the other offical language. Until World War II led to a minimizing of all things German (including the language), textbooks in the midwest were often printed in German.
